Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2013.
"Conciliationism" is the view that disagreement with apparently qualified disputants gives us a powerful reason for doubting our disputed views, a reason that will often be sufficient to defeat what would otherwise be strong evidential justification for our position. This dissertation focuses both on questions concerning the theoretical foundations of conciliationism and on questions concerning its real-world significance, especially in the domain of religion. I begin by arguing that the most plausible of the current conciliatory views does not lend support to religious skepticism, contrary to what many have supposed. I then develop a new theoretical account of the rational significance of disagreement and argue that the moderate version of conciliationism that emerges from this account is more plausible than leading conciliatory views. The account I develop rejects the problematic "independence" requirement typical of other conciliatory approaches and replaces it with a more plausible "calibration" principle. Next, I challenge a key principle typically taken for granted in the disagreement literature by identifying circumstances where rationality exhibits a surprisingly robust form of "perspectivalism." Finally, I defend conciliationism against a troubling self-defeat objection.
