Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2013.
One of the most prominent Imami scholars of the Buyid age is al-Sharif al-Murtad&dotbelow;a 'Ali b. H&dotbelow;usayn al-Musawi (d. 436/1044), the theologian, jurist, litterateur, politician and head of the Imami Shri. community. This dissertation proposes to identify, analyze and contextualize his theological and jurisprudential contributions. It aims to achieve a precise understanding of the underlying assumptions of his worldview and to assess his legacy within the Imami context, particularly in connection with his long association with Mu`tazili scholars and profound knowledge of their doctrines. His conceptualization of religious experience, when seen as an interconnected whole, also helps to explain certain moral and epistemic positions that have greatly influenced the intellectual framework of Imami Shiism.

The dissertation is divided into an introduction, six chapters and a conclusion. The introduction presents the themes that constitute the core questions of the dissertation and situates them in the context of its broader approach. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of Murtad&dotbelow;a's social milieu and historical context, a detailed biography and a comprehensive survey of his works. Chapter 2 introduces Murtad&dotbelow;a's epistemology and natural philosophy as prelude to a discussion of the question of divine essence and attributes and the problem of human agency. It then discusses his view on the origins of religious experience, the basis of moral obligation and God's power over the affairs of the world. Chapter 3 covers Murtad&dotbelow;a's view on moral theory and divine justice, addressing the basis and classification of the moral value of acts, their possible consequences, humans' best interest, God's grace toward His creation and the question of otherworldly recompense. Chapter 4 examines Murtad&dotbelow;a's elaborate theory of Imama; in addition to the necessity of Imama and the qualifications of the Imams known from reason and revelation, Murtad&dotbelow;a's lengthy response to the challenge of the twelfth Imam's occultation is also examined. Chapter 5 is concerned with prophethood; the theoretical background here includes the necessity of prophethood and the means of verifying prophetical claims. Murtad&dotbelow;a's position on the miraculous nature of the Qur'an is analyzed here as part of the discussion on Muh&dotbelow;ammad's prophethood. Chapter 6 is dedicated to Murtad&dotbelow;a's legal theory, and covers such questions as the sources of law, their interrelation and the relationship between law and morality, in addition to the distinctive aspects of his jurisprudence vis-a-vis other contemporary Imam' positions. The conclusion provides a succinct summary of Murtad&dotbelow;a's theological system and situates him in the broader context of the development of Imam' theology and jurisprudence in its classical period.
