Thesis (Ph.D.)--George Mason University, 2012.
This dissertation examines the determinants of economic growth in the Kyrgyz Republic. The research empirically investigates the role of neoclassical factors of production such as capital and labor and institutions on economic growth in eight Kyrgyz regions over a seven year period (1997-2003) using official Kyrgyz government provided data. The research also examines economic growth at the national level over a twenty year period (1991-2011) using independent data from internationally recognized socioeconomic institutions (e.g. World Bank). A dynamic panel data analysis and regression approach is used for estimation. The results demonstrate that key drivers affecting Kyrgyz economic growth during are constrained capital accumulation driven by crises in foreign financial markets, glut of labor arising from the closure of military-industrial production centers, reduced income resulting from decreased wages and institutional change associated with transition from a command-driven to a free market economy. The results also indicate that patrimony exerts a statistically significant effect on Kyrgyz economic activities. Analysis of the independent data spanning a period of two decades confirms that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is the principle determinant of Kyrgyz economic growth.
