What are some of the major aspects that make up Muslim identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)? This literature-based research project set out to explore Bosnian and foreign literature sources to identify, synthesize and interpret salient identity threads that contribute to who Bosnian Muslims are today. The goal of this thesis is to help both outsiders and Bosnian Muslims understand the rich history and many facets of Muslim identity in BiH. Personally, I also wanted to increase my understanding of the people I live and work with in preparation to return to BiH at the conclusion of this project, with the goal of future doctoral research.

520 $a This literature-based ethnography involved studying approximately 100 books and articles about Bosnian Muslims, against the backdrop of my participant observation experience living in BiH for three years.
520 $a Four major identity threads emerged from the data: Muslim identity which grew out of diverse Christian and Islamic roots, Muslim identity as a multi-layered concept including ethno-political status and which is expressed through differentiation from the other ethno-religious communities of BiH, Muslim identity conveyed through popular Islamic practices, and Muslim identity which resurged through the experience of war in the early 1990s and is debated by different Muslim groups up to the present day.
