One role perception suggested to be crucial to group functioning is how athletes come to accept their role within interdependent sport teams (Beauchamp, Bray, Eys, & Carron, 2002; Beauchamp, Bray, Fielding, & Eys, 2005; Carron & Eys, 2012). The general purpose of the present study was to gain an understanding of role acceptance in sport. Semi-structured phenomenological interviews were conducted with 15 male (n=8) and female (n=7) intercollegiate athletes from a variety of interdependent sport teams (e.g., basketball, soccer, football, lacrosse, and rugby) to investigate their perceptions of role acceptance. The interviews were subsequently transcribed verbatim and analyzed for emergent themes. An additional four athletes were recruited for the purpose of verification interviews. The credibility and trustworthiness of the data were enhanced through the use of a reflexive interview, member checks, triangulation of data (e.g., field notes, background demographic questionnaire), an independent review of the meaning units by a co-researcher, and an expert audit review of the thematic analysis. From a definition standpoint, the results revealed that role acceptance refers to an athlete's willingness to fulfill his or her role responsibilities. Athletes perceived role acceptance to be influenced by perceptions of leadership, team cohesion, intra-team communication, tenure, and other role related perceptions. Furthermore, the consequences of role acceptance were perceived in light of the group's environment (e.g., team performance, team climate, normative behaviour, interpersonal conflict) and in relation to the individual (e.g., emotional state, attrition). Theoretical and practical implications of the present thesis are discussed.
