Thesis (Ph.D.)--Howard University, 2013.
The purpose of this study is to understand how Black women's spiritual health identities are shaped through spirituality, religion and the Black Church. A spiritual health identity refers to the recognition and consciousness that a healthy spiritual life is essential to one's existence. It effects how they see themselves and their relationships to other people. It also encompasses practices that help to maintain overall life balance. This study uses a qualitative interpretative approach using semi-structured interviews. Three themes were derived from participant interviews: 1) Self Reflection through Spirituality and Religion, which speaks to the ways in which Black women in this study understand the influence of their faith on their identity, 2) Instruction and Information within the protection of community, speaks to the role the Black Church plays in shaping the spiritual health identity of Black women, in this study and 3) Agency in My World and Beyond, addresses how the Black women in this study, construct, perform, and articulate their own spiritual health identity and engage the world.
