The purpose of this study is to investigate whether psychoeducation will increase the help-seeking attitudes of Vietnamese refugees. Many Vietnamese refugees experienced traumatic events such as death, starvation, and violence as a result of coming to the United States. When combined with one of the lowest rates of mental health utilization among all ethnic groups, Vietnamese refugees are at a great risk for developing mental illness. This research assessed whether psychoeducation is a viable tool to increase the help-seeking attitudes of Vietnamese refugees for post-traumatic stress disorder by using a two-group pretest-posttest quantitative design. A total of 134 participants were assigned either to the treatment group (n = 85) or the control group (n = 52). The data were collected using the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help-Short form (ATSPPH) scale. The results indicated that there is a statistically significant difference in the treatment group (p < .05). This means there was an increase in attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help after reading the psychoeducation. There was no difference in the control group. The study also found no gender differences in attitudes toward seeking help. Age, education, years in the U.S., and marital status were not a predictor of attitudes toward seeking professional help. Only income was a predictor for attitudes toward seeking professional help. Limitations of the study included a narrow demographic population and the translation of the materials. The implications of the findings of this study were discussed and recommendations for future research were made.
