Despite the overwhelming amount of work concerning the Khmer Rouge regime of Cambodia in the mid to late 1970's, there are few researchers who have sought to analyze the first person narratives and the oral histories of its survivors. Most research makes reference to the Khmer Rouge class divisions between new people and base people to describe life under the regime, oftentimes overlooking the variation in experiences between men and women, and those who remained in Cambodia versus those who moved abroad. It is essential to understand the varying experiences of people from different regions, age groups, and gender categories, and the ways in which these people construct their narratives to get a better idea of daily life for each category of people. Although the regime claimed to be puritanical in nature and based on equality, the oral histories and narratives contradict this claim, which is evident in the differences in the accounts of survivors and the occurrence of sexual violence. In addition, Cambodian cultural models and the influence of western ideas or world views has had an impact on the way in which survivors detail their experiences and reconcile them within their current perspective. Through sharing their stories, survivors are not only able to create some sort of order and understanding of this violent and traumatic time period, but they are able to impart knowledge to successive generations in the hopes of preventing a tragedy of this magnitude in the future.
