Thesis (Ph.D.)--Union Theological Seminary, 2013.
For Black Catholics, remembering our past, honoring our present and imagining our future necessarily informs our cultural articulation in the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy. Negro Spirituals, an early musical tradition of the Black experience, are a foundational part of African American cultural, civic, and theological history. Several composers created Mass settings for Catholic communities based on the musical idioms of the Spirituals and inspired by the liturgical changes prescribed in the documents and worship practices since the Second Vatican Council. Thus, they brought together the African American historical and liturgical heritage: "authentically Black and truly Catholic.".

Welcome Table: A Mass of Spirituals was composed/arranged by Kim R. Harris and M. Roger Holland, II in partial fulfillment of Ph.D. comprehensive examinations, in Worship and the Arts, at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. The Mass setting was published by GIA Publications in 2012 as a stand-alone score and in the Lead Me, Guide Me hymnal, second edition.

What makes Welcome Table: A Mass of Spirituals different from similar settings by Catholic composers in the past is its literal treatment of the folk melodies. The text is taken from the newly revised third edition of the Roman Missal. The melodies are those of the Negro Spirituals. The Welcome Table Mass uses recognizable tunes in totality, thus presenting a very authentic rendering of the Spirituals in the context of the Eucharistic liturgy.

This dissertation explores the Welcome Table Mass as an example of Black Catholic musical inculturation: its historical and liturgical context, composition, and use by worship communities. Its purpose is to place Welcome Table within the continuing Black Catholic journey toward creating, experiencing, and evaluating effective worship and liturgical music. My hope is to encourage the maturing and diversifying Black Catholic community, as well as other faith communities, to make use of Negro Spirituals and liturgical music emerging from the genre to enliven their worship celebrations based on the beauty of the music and the justice orientation of its meaning.
