Thesis (Ph.D.)--Union Theological Seminary, 2013.
The purpose of this dissertation is: (1) to provide an analysis of the historical roots of Western Christianity's ambivalent attitude toward Jesus' teachings on wealth and poverty by cataloging Jesus' teachings and those parts of the theologies of St. Augustine, John Calvin, John Wesley, and Walter Rauschenbusch that speak to their valuation of wealth and poverty as a way to outline the development and anatomy of what I call "a legacy of a theology of prosperity," and (2) to ascertain the significance of this genealogy of ambivalence for the construction of a womanist soteriology, while engaging the work of womanist theologians Kelley Brown Douglas and Delores S. Williams, and the life and work of Fannie Lou Hamer to offer nuanced reflections on and practical model for responding to this legacy.

My thesis is this ambivalence toward Jesus' teachings on poverty and wealth has fostered, from the patristic period onward, "a legacy of a theology of prosperity," which has vital implications for the construction of a womanist soteriological perspective that at once addresses Black women and men's longing for "abundant living" and takes seriously Jesus' teachings on material redistribution.

I use the term "theology of prosperity" to refer to the way in which wealth accumulation have come to be understood in Christian faith as part of God's divine order, linking individual prosperity, social power, mobility, and material acquisition to God's blessings and setting aside the notion that Jesus required a radical revaluation of wealth and poverty or redistribution of material goods.

I contend Jesus' call for a radical devaluation of wealth, consistently expressed in the Synoptic Gospels, is a call to initiate redemptive responses that renounce stratified power, privilege, and wealth inequity while ushering in a new human paradigm that values non-hierarchical relations, egalitarianism, and a culture of sharing and hospitality.

I delineate a descriptive of the anatomy of this legacy for the Black Church which speaks to both the traditional Black Church's ambivalence toward Jesus' teachings on poverty and wealth, and the rise of contemporary prosperity theologies in Black churches. Finally, I will offer my constructive and practical womanist response.
