Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2013.
As one of the towering scholars in the second half of the twentieth century, Thomas Forsyth Torrance took up the challenge of integrating theology and science by producing a series of works that introduced scientific theology to the Christian community. The fundamental assertion on which Torrance stands is that all genuine human knowledge depends upon the human mind's ability to be conformed to the real object. For this reason, he asserts that theology is in the business of interpreting reality critically and faithfully on its own terms. Standing on this conviction, Torrance lays down his dictum, that is, theology is science, and develops a theoscientific method. Against this background, in dialogue with Torrance, this dissertation sets out to assess the foundational methodological framework of Torrance's scientific approach for the purpose of constructing a triadic methodological structure for theological science. This dissertation recognizes not only Torrance's efforts to bridge the gap between theology and science based on "embodied" mathematical worldview, but also critically reviews his theoscientific project by identifying his restrictive tendencies that limit the full outworking of human imagination. Based upon this analysis, this study constructively modifies Torrance's scientific theology by complementing his realist agenda with the pneumatological imagination. In this context, this dissertation argues that theological science grounded on the pneumatological imagination can expand the restrictive tendencies of Torrance's theo-scientific project, thereby giving rise to a triadic analogical approach that recognizes the interplay of ontologic, informal logic, and translogic in the development of theo-scientific method.
