Rising unemployment rates among pharmacists pose numerous concerns that pharmacy entrepreneurship may address. More pharmacists may become unemployed, and yet insufficient pharmaceutical care may persist, if the pharmacists' low level of entrepreneurial intention is not investigated. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the extent to which entrepreneurial self-efficacy skills in innovation, marketing, networking, management, and finance predict the entrepreneurial intention of pharmacists. Secondly, the moderating role of prior entrepreneurial exposure in the relationship between pharmacists' overall entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention was examined. From a randomly selected sample of 900 licensed pharmacists in Colorado, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas, and Vermont, 375 participants completed the online survey. The participants (52% male), 72% of whom have been employed for at least 10 years, expressed low entrepreneurial intention (M = 1.88, SD = 0.98). Results of multiple linear regressions were significant, R2 = .18, F(5, 369) = 15.86, p < .001. Of the five entrepreneurial self-efficacy skills analyzed, the only significant predictors of entrepreneurial intention were marketing skills (beta = 0.18, p = .015) and networking skills (beta = 0.21, p = .003). Results of hierarchical regression for moderation effects were significant, R2 = .172, F(3, 371) = 25.67, p < .001. Moderation was not supported because the interaction term was not significant (beta = 0.099, p = .603). Within the sample of pharmacists, prior entrepreneurial exposure did not moderate the predictive relationship between self-reported entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention. Entrepreneurship education for pharmacists should center on improving entrepreneurial self-efficacy skills in marketing and networking, and should emphasize experiential training in independent pharmacy business environments. Future research should investigate specific contributions of entrepreneurial self-efficacy skills to the success of well-established independent community pharmacies. Additionally, future investigations should explore other socio-cognitive factors, outside the entrepreneurial self-efficacy construct, that discourage individuals from entrepreneurship.
