According to the Small Business Administration, 30% of small business start-ups fail within 2 years, and 50% of start-ups fail within the first 5 years. Efforts to reduce the failure rate include incubators, loans, and consulting, but little is known about when entrepreneurs should seek external expertise. This phenomenological study was conducted to explore factors that motivate small business entrepreneurs to seek assistance from outside experts to help develop more sustainable business strategies and reduce the risk of failure. Theories of the organizational life cycle and dynamic states models served as a basis for generating the interview questions. In-depth interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 20 entrepreneurs in a metropolitan area in Ohio. The recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed for themes. Key themes that emerged were the kind of help entrepreneurs needed, when they needed it, networking and external programs they have used, and advice. Findings indicated that start-up costs, marketing, and regulatory compliance were issues for which most entrepreneurs sought assistance. Other findings included (a) the importance of accountants as trusted business advisors; (b) the importance of networking; (c) the relatively low level of awareness of government programs; and (d) those who have used government programs view them as too bureaucratic, cumbersome, and sometimes contradictory. Highlighting entrepreneur capacity limitations and operational factors for which entrepreneurs should seek external expertise may help reduce business failures. By promptly seeking outside experts and enhancing small business sustainability, entrepreneurs may contribute to positive social change through offering stable jobs for their employees, better products and services, as well as enhancing taxes for development of societal infrastructures.
