Thesis (M.F.A.)--Mills College, 2014.
There are several ways in which music notation can function. Notation can give specific instruction and/or direction to a performer in the form of symbols and graphics (i.e. standard notation). Notation can also function as a reflective source of inspiration. These types of scores do not give any instruction or concrete direction of sound generating techniques or particular sonic events. I discuss four types of notation --- standard, graphic, structured-indeterminate and text scores--- and how they function as either specific or suggestive notation. Notation provides information in a variety of formats, which fundamentally shapes the performers' relationship with the score, each other, and time. I discuss several standard works, and also my own compositions, outlining compositional aims and methods of notation.
