Thesis (M.A.)--Mills College, 2013.
The purpose of this self-study was to understand how an African American early childhood educator can authentically define for herself the ethnic and cultural diversity of preschool students through the use of multicultural children's literature. The goal of the study was to enhance my emerging philosophy as an early childhood educator committed to promoting multiculturalism in the classroom environment. Data were collected through naturalistic observation of a mixed age preschool classroom, field notes describing children's responses to multicultural children's literature, reflection journals, and analysis of multicultural children's literature. Through analysis of the data the themes that emerged were the significance of being a culturally responsive early childhood educator, building a multicultural library consistent with the interests of the children, and children narratively and visually identifying with the context and characters of literature. This study makes an important contribution to the literature because it further informs the research regarding fostering multiculturalism in early childhood education environments.
