Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fielding Graduate University, 2014.
This dissertation investigates the experience of managers who have gone through involuntary job loss and have successfully recovered to a parallel career track with minimal short-term impact to daily functioning. To understand the different experiences of a targeted hierarchical group, it was deemed appropriate to conduct phenomenologically influenced interviews and template analysis designed to deepen understanding of the individuals' experiences. While broad generalization was not the goal of this dissertation, it was found that several themes emerged across stories in such a way as to suggest opportunities for development for both individuals experiencing job loss as well as professionals who are in job placement or career development industries. These themes are the role of perceived financial risk, viewing experience in light of existing social/financial/economic conditions, waiting for the right opportunity, reconnecting with lost opportunities, and an extension of networking theory.
