Social media tools are blurring the lines between informal and formal learning methods enabling a shift towards an adaptive organizational learning model. Further research is required to better understand how social media tools can be integrated within organizations' informal and formal learning processes to accelerate individual learning, increase knowledge sharing, and understand how the use of social media tools fits within existing organizational learning theories.

A semi-structured qualitative interview process was used to answer the research question: How do organizations integrate social media tools into their learning processes? Five senior learning leaders, from large international organizations with annual revenues of $4 billion to $20 billion, were selected to participate in the study. The participants were selected based on widespread recognition for successfully integrating social media tools into their organizational learning processes.

This study positions Albert Bandura's social learning theory, specifically observational learning, and Etienne Wenger's social theory of learning, specifically communities of practice, within organizational learning theory. Current research suggests integrating social media tools within structured learning processes can increase employee knowledge and productivity, compared to development practices that solely rely on formal learning methods. This study argues for the need to expand the definition of Bandura's social learning theory to include how social media tools contribute to observational learning theory.
