Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2014.
This study investigates differences in eating attitudes, weight loss behaviors, exercise habits, and body mass index (BMI) between female former collegiate athletes and nonathletes. Participants were 115 female college graduates who completed an anonymous online survey. The survey contained six separate measures that assessed a range of attitudes and behaviors related to eating, exercise, and weight loss. Results showed that former athletes engaged in more current maladaptive weight loss behaviors than nonathletes and had slightly higher BMI scores. Female former athletes may be at heightened risk for engaging in unhealthy weight loss behaviors after retirement from collegiate sport and experience higher BMIs than nonathletes.
