Thesis (D.Ed.)--Capella University, 2014.
The purpose of this action research study was to implement an intervention to improve attitudes toward writing in a high school English class. The implications and effects of negative writing attitudes in the nation's workforce and post-secondary education systems were researched. The problem was found to be an overwhelming one, worthy of further attention. Based on research that showed writing attitudes can be changed and improved, an intervention process was designed for classroom use to create an environment that would enhance student attitudes toward writing. Qualitative data that ensured triangulation of data was employed to analyze the results of this study. This triangulation of data was completed by using two qualitative questionnaires with openended questions and focus group discussions. In addition to the three qualitative data resources, a class was designated as one to not receive the intervention but subjected to the same qualitative data instruments. The data from the class which did not receive the intervention was used as a comparison to the class which received the intervention for the study. The study showed a positive change in student attitudes toward writing to such a degree that the intervention was deemed appropriate for further use at the high school level.
