Current data illustrate the need for quality English language development (ELD) strategies. There is an obvious gap in academic proficiency between English language learners (ELLs) and their peers. A number of recent studies focused on the effectiveness of specific strategies designed to assist English language acquisition, but few have considered the perceptions of the educators implementing them. Educators should be active participants in the ELD programs designed to meet the diverse needs of their students. This study analyzed teachers' perceptions about the effectiveness of ELD strategies used in a California school district. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions, practices, and barriers of educators regarding ELD. This explanatory case study examined Grade 4, 5, and 6 educators' viewpoints about English language acquisition strategies. Data about the perceived risks and benefits of ELD strategies might lead to the development of more effective ELD programs for ELLs. The primary method of data collection was a one-on-one interview format. The interview questions focused on the educators' perceptions of the effectiveness of ELD strategies for English language acquisition by ELLs.
