Analyzing a range of films produced in the 1980's reveals a powerful linkage between the presidency and Hollywood directors. In some cases this relationship was one of confirmation, but in other cases was clearly adversarial. Ronald Reagan utilized his time spent in Hollywood, as actor and union man, to develop a persona that Americans of the 1980's gravitated towards after the political and social upheavals of the 1960's and 1970's. His conservative public image and natural charisma propelled him into politics, eventually landing him in the White House. Once there he was an inspiration to the general public and a public relations boon to Hollywood. The era of the blockbuster had begun and many of Reagan's messages and actions were incorporated as themes for some filmmakers, however, others weren't so enamored with the president creating films that refuted the popular themes he was endorsing.
