The goal of the present study was to develop and validate a scale of the Discrepancy of Parental Expectation Inventory (DPEI). The discrepancy of Parental Expectation (DPE) is defined as the discrepancies between perceived parental expectations and perceived self-performance. Study 1, using 392 college students in Taiwan, examined the scale construction and the item development of the inventory, including the results of factor analyses, normative information, and reliability estimates. The results of the factor analysis suggested the presence of three factors: Personal Maturity, Academic Achievement, and Dating Concerns. The factors demonstrate acceptable to excellent internal consistency ($\underline\alpha$s =.74 to.93); the distributions and measures of central tendency suggest a wide range of scores across individuals. Good construct validity was also found for the Perceived Parental Expectation (PPE) and Discrepancy of Parental Expectation (DPE) scales. Study 2, using 99 college students in Taiwan, provided initial estimates of the (a) test-retest reliability, (b) construct validity, (c) discriminant validity, and (d) predictive validity of the DPEI. Estimates of test-retest reliability (rs =.61 to.85) indicated that the instrument appeared to be relatively stable over time; the factors again revealed acceptable to excellent internal consistency ($\underline\alpha$s =.74 to.93). As hypothesized, the DPE factors served as better predictors of emotional distress than the PPE factors. Evidences for construct validity were provided by correlations with depression, trait anxiety, and trait anger. Estimates of predictive validity only revealed a significant correlation between Personal Maturity of the DPE and depression over a four-week period. In terms of evidence supporting discriminant validity, the PPE and DPE factors seemed not to be influenced by social desirability. Implications of the results as well as further research are discussed.
