Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2013.
The goal of the thesis was to investigate the process of students communicating with faculty who refused to change a disappointing grade. The study predicted that the medium of the interaction would influence the nature of the conversation which would affect the evaluation of the conversation and ultimately course evaluations. Participants (N=165) completed measures of politeness, attributions, teacher immediacy, class satisfaction, affective learning, and demographics. The results indicated that the medium did not have a statistically significant impact. The politeness of the refusal message does have an impact on classroom outcomes.
