Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2013.
Symbolic play serves unique and important functions in the treatment of trauma in children. Symbolization creates a bridge between children's unconscious and conscious functioning, distilling the complexity of trauma into phenomenological elements that can be better integrated by the child through processing with the clinician. Such therapeutic treatment can give children unprecedented control over reenactments of experiences that previously rendered them helpless. The developmental, physiological, and cognitive impact of trauma will be discussed in order to explicate the influence of trauma on symbolic functioning. Drawing on several theoretical frameworks that support the notion of symbolization as an essential human quality, the functions of symbolic play in the therapeutic treatment of three young children with trauma histories will be discussed.
