Thesis (M.Arch.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2009.
This thesis explores the adaptive re-use of the Rossdale Power Plant in Edmonton, Alberta, and its transformation through an architectural strategy that connects natural and cultural heritage to a sustainable future in order to understand its unique sense of place. Architectural interventions are made at different scales on the site and buildings, which can be experienced along three different paths. The Building Path examines ideas about the industrial past of energy production on the site, the Landscape Path makes a connection to the historical cultural heritage of the area and its location in the River Valley, and the Energy Path brings together concepts related to the larger environmental context and re-purposing of the site. Intervention strategies of selective additions, removals, and artifacts left in-situ, tell the story of the site's past and potential future by bringing together ideas of memory, value, absence, and presence.
