Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2013.
In this thesis we study a class of devices consisting of a waveguide with a thin structured membrane. These devices have been introduced in the physics literature under the name "membrane metamaterials". Our main focus is the connection between the structure of the membrane and its scattering properties. In a series of recent (2008) physics experiments it was demonstrated that structured elastic membranes in waveguides can exhibit unusual scattering properties. In particular, for certain membrane structures it is possible to achieve zero transmission and total reflection for particular frequencies. In the thesis a scalar model for the waveguide-membrane system is introduced and analyzed. The model successfully explains the experimental findings and demonstrates that the zero-transmission phenomenon is general and may occur for a variety of geometries and boundary conditions.
