The use of aerobic exercise as a means of treating mental health issues and as a means of maintaining mental health has been researched for over 30 years, with the majority of results showing similarly that aerobic exercise has positive affects on mental health. This study aims to investigate whether recreational basketball would have a similar result. The study also investigated whether durations of time moderated the relationship between recreational basketball and mental health, which was an overall mood measure known at Total Mood Disturbance. It was found that recreational basketball does have a significant relationship to change in Total Mood Disturbance as measured and recorded using the Profile of Mood States survey. Being that this significant relationship exists, duration of time did not show a strong relationship as a moderator and needs further investigation in the future.
