The purpose of this content analysis was to examine the effects of childhood physical abuse on adults as it is portrayed in film. The results of this study indicate that there are common behavioral, emotional, and interpersonal problems that are displayed by the characters in adulthood. Specific themes expressed by the characters include self-injurious and suicidal behavior, substance use, vocational problems, emotional problems, and interpersonal problems. These behaviors and issues are associated with problems experienced by adult survivors of childhood abuse in empirical studies. This content analysis examined how these films portray the consequences of childhood abuse in adulthood and coincide with research findings in past studies on the effects of childhood physical abuse. Social workers who pursue therapy as a profession can use films as a tool in conjunction with conventional therapy in assisting clients in working through and dealing with issues of physical abuse they experienced in childhood and the impact it has on them as adults.
