With increased emphasis on notions of uncertainty and civic science in the context of 'natural resource management', participatory processes are increasingly including a wider range of community groups and stakeholders. Current methodologies for involving Indigenous communities, and the programs and institutions with which they are expected to collaborate, remain largely embedded in technical scientific discourse. This thesis examines processes of Indigenous involvement through case studies from Australia, Canada and New Zealand where spatial methodologies are increasingly employed, but often without an adequate interpretative underpinning. In Canada, this has resulted in failures to communicate values and worldviews between environmental decision-makers, the Maiyoo Keyoh in British Columbia, and industry, in 2008. The spread of spatial methodologies to Australia (Yorta Yorta Nation in north-west Victoria and the Murray Darling Basin Authority) and New Zealand (Tia Kina Te Taiao, South Island and Landcare's Integrated Catchment Management program) has had mixed results depending on the communication of relational ways of thinking.

520 $a In considering these experiences, this thesis develops a methodology which can facilitate more effective communication and interpretation, situating multiple ways of thinking about landscapes in pluralistic contexts. Stemming from a situated and contextual conceptual framework around place-making, the thesis draws towards environmental decision-making which can embrace multiple frames or ways of thinking about environment (ontological pluralism). In recognising ontological pluralism, dominant approaches to 'management' (and notions such as adaptive management) which see the task of NRM as a technical exercise are reframed into a conversation around multiple and diverse people-landscape relationships. This shift broadens the scope of decision-making from a mere 'inclusive' exercise of knowledges towards one which recognises the social, historical and political contexts of environmental decision-making around multiple frames of landscape connection and specific histories and geographies of disconnection, belonging and contestation. The thesis draws upon convergent spaces between Indigenous knowledges and emerging geomorphic and geographic literatures around relationality and contingency in time-space to identify and explore an epistemological frame or methodology called 'ethnogeomorphology'. In doing so, the thesis offers foundations for an ethical intercultural methodology in environmental decision-making.
