The study systematically examined the idea that variations in patterns of interactions between mothers and their children are related to years of formal schooling achieved by mothers. This study, carried out in the Guatemalan Mayan community of San Pedro, examined the interactions of 47 mothers varying in years of schooling and three related school-age children (ages 6--12 years) while constructing a three-dimensional puzzle. The Mayan mothers with little schooling (0--2 years) were more likely to be involved in horizontal shared multiparty engagements with the children than Mayan mothers with extensive experience with schooling (12 or more years), who were more likely to be involved in hierarchical division of labor engagements with the children. The results indicate that Western formal schooling contributes to shaping traditional collaborative social organizations among indigenous groups.
