This qualitative research study uses narrative inquiry to explore the phenomenon of spontaneously emerging songs known as healing songs from the perspective of the healers who receive and sing them. In open-ended interviews, 6 healers described their lived experience of healing songs through narrative and stories. The healers were asked to comprehensively describe their experience of healing songs. Ten interview questions addressed possible aspects of healing songs and were used to elicit additional detail for the descriptions.

Thematic analysis was used for interpretation and data analysis. Themes were extracted from the healers' narratives, and a theme composition containing the findings was written for each healer, based on that healer's set of themes. Thematic analysis across the healers revealed 5 themes for further exploration: (a) relationship of healer, healing song, and spirit; (b) how healing songs are received; (c) healing songs as distinct energies; (d) oneness, or the inseparability of physical and spiritual worlds; and (e) a modern approach. Elaboration on these themes is presented in the section immediately following the healers' theme compositions. Two themes emerged from the thematic analysis across healers as potential overarching themes: the relationship of healer, healing song, and spirit; and oneness. These 2 remaining themes were explored from various perspectives using applicable literature sources.

This study appears to be the first to interview multiple healers and shamans regarding their descriptions of their lived experience of healing songs. The study is not complete without the songs themselves---four of the healers sang at least 1 healing song during their interviews, thus providing the direct experience of healing songs.

The findings suggest the possible use of healing songs, which are non-invasive, in healthcare settings as part of a potentially more holistic approach to recovery. Its significance might also be individual: Singing healing songs daily or regularly can be empowering, as (for these healers) healing songs are known to carry the power of spiritual worlds in the sounds.
