Thesis (M.A.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2013.
It is important for individuals to be able to demonstrate creative behavior because they are sometimes faced with situations where a solution is not readily available. If creative responses increase with intervention, then creativity appears to be teachable. Three fifth grade students in a gifted and talented math class participated in this study. During baseline each child was given five materials (Play Doh, a straw, water, baking soda, and pompoms). Each child was asked to demonstrate three fractions (3/4, 1/6, and 2/3) with each of the five materials ("Show me three fourths with each of the objects on the table."). During intervention, the child watched as the instructor demonstrated how to show fractions with each material. Following demonstrations, each child was again asked to show each fraction with each material. The findings of this study could improve classroom instruction because providing demonstrations of a variety of examples improves the flexibility of student responses (creativity).
