Social media allows users to interact, network and build their social brand on sites such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Vine. However, the combination of advanced smartphones that capture pictures, videos and allow users to instantly upload assets to their favorite sites is proving to also be a catalyst for violence. Cyber-banging and videos of gang activity, domestic fights and arguments are glaring examples of when social media goes wrong. While the consumption of violence as entertainment is not new; many young people do not realize the impact of their actions. We will only find resolution in building community, as negative, and at times violent, activity online reflects the unhealthy state of urban communities.
