Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Irvine, 2013.
The goal of this thesis is to introduce a different mathematical approach to analyzing issues motivated by the mathematical structures found in the social sciences. The current use of mathematics tends to emphasize the ability to solve models, with a particular focus on the ability to solve more complicated or realistic models. While this outcome-centric approach has had definite success, it also has a limited ability to capture concerns fundamental to the nature of social systems. For example, this type of analysis is typically local in nature and is unable to characterize where and why qualitatively different outcomes arise. The approach introduced here provides a global perspective of a system by examining its algebraic structure. Doing this gives not only a global characterization, but provides a new mathematical foundation for asking more general research questions. This thesis explains how the algebraic systems approach can be used by showing its application to game theory.
