This action research project addressed the implementation and sustainment of elementary school foreign language programs in Southwest Minnesota along with their sources of funding and instructional and assessment methodologies. Surveys were sent to 55 elementary school principals in Southwest Minnesota whose schools were members of the Southwest/West Central Service Cooperative. Follow-up interviews were conducted with principals of schools that did offer foreign language instruction in the elementary school. Quantitative data collected were displayed numerically, often in table form. The findings of this study revealed that schools in Southwest Minnesota took similar steps when implementing their programs, sustainment challenges included difficulty finding and keeping quality teachers and lack of funding, grant money was used most often to fund elementary school foreign language programs, and schools in Southwest Minnesota used a variety of instructional and assessment methodologies for teaching foreign languages in the elementary school. Results of this study will provide relevant information for implementing an elementary school foreign language program at an elementary school in Southwest Minnesota.
