Thesis (D.M.A.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1999.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of four practice procedures for learning polyphonic piano music. Thirty-six college non-keyboard majors were randomly assigned to one of four practice procedures. Subjects in Group 1 had predominantly unilateral practice. Subjects in Group 2 had coordinated practice. Subjects in Group 3 had coordinated practice combined with perceptual-motor activities encoded by a kinesthetic strategy. Subjects in Group 4 had coordinated practice combined with perceptual-motor activities encoded by a verbal strategy. The dependent measures were the number of inaccurate trials and the number of performance mistakes per trial. Performance mistakes were classified into three mutually exclusive categories: mistake in pitch only, mistake in rhythm only, and mistake in both pitch and rhythm. The relationships between the treatment types and the categories of performance mistakes were investigated.

Results indicated no statistical difference among the four practice procedures in terms of either dependent measure. A Chi-square analysis indicated a significant relationship among the categories of mistakes and the types of practice procedures. Unilateral practice (Group 1) was found to associate with more mistakes in pitch only and less mistakes in rhythm only, coordinated practice (Group 2) was found to associate with more mistake in rhythm only and less mistakes in pitch only. Findings of the present study were discussed and interpreted in light of theories and findings from motor studies and learning psychology.
