The purpose of this philosophical study was to assess the nature, role, and value of music analysis. Analysis is deemed valuable as one way of knowing the music. Evidence is gathered from the writer's reported experiences, which occurred during Schenkerian and twentieth-century analysis classes and piano lessons taken after a long absence from the field. The author's two analyses of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, written twenty years apart, are seen as symbolic of the maturation of cognitive musicianship.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Analysis then seemed irrelevant to the writer's subsequent performance study. After considering limitations of analysis, two conclusions were found: applied music study may draw on intuitive variants of analysis, and questions raised by analysis are intrinsically valuable even if unanswerable.

The writer's experiences suggest that a constructivist learning theory was operative throughout. Application of the constructivist paradigm to the pedagogy of analysis is discussed by several authorities cited.
