Fall accidents are common among nursing home residents and pose a significant problem for quality of life in many countries. Several studies have documented multifaceted fall-prevention interventions; however, there have been few studies that focused on the environment in relation to resident falls. This study investigated the interior environmental risk factors for falls within 13 Japanese nursing homes, using documented fall incident report data of 1,228 falls, to determine which specific locations and interior environment features such as flooring, furniture, assistive devices, and lighting were associated with higher risk of falls. Out of the 1,228 falls, 52% of the falls occurred in resident rooms. A total of 21 environmental variables was analyzed, and statistical analysis indicated no significant relationships between these variables and the fall rates. The researcher discussed the implications of certain environmental features in relation to falls in nursing homes and made suggestions for further research.
