Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2013.
The performance appraisal process has been a studied phenomenon for the past 50 years and generational differences have been a recent phenomenon studied the past 10 years. The purpose of this study is to determine whether managers from the three generational groups (Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y) studied respond differently to the performance appraisal process. This study explored managers' performance review reactions after having gone through the performance review process. This is a qualitative exploratory inquiry study that used 30 in depth one-on-one interviews and analyzed three generational groups: Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. Past research in the area of performance appraisals focused on rater accuracy (psychometric) but recent research has focused on rater/ratee themes (contextual) regarding reactions to the performance appraisal. The results of this study should help human resources practitioners and company leaders understand the reactions of the performance appraisal process by generations.
