Thesis (M.A.)--St. Thomas University, 2013.
Homelessness among women has become a nationwide epidemic that is caused by various oppressive circumstances which include financial instability, poor psychological health, domestic violence and substance abuse. This study analyzes the poor psychological health found within homeless women, and how art therapy can assist with increasing self-esteem, self-worth and self-awareness, which helps to improve women's psychological health. Accordingly, this researcher proposes a modified action plan for the development of an artist-in-residence program for the Miami Rescue Mission: Center for Women and Children titled Soulful Art.

Soulful Art will initially be dedicated to the women residing at the Miami Rescue Mission: Center for Women and Children, and will be an addition to the shelter's Alpha curriculum (a faith and spirituality program). The mission of Soulful Art is to transform lives through artistic creation and self-exploration, as well as through involvement in cultural arts. The relationship between the proposed arts program and the faith and spirituality teachings of the Miami Rescue Mission will assist women in developing a more positive view of themselves, as well as establishing effective communication and social skills, and provide a venue for the development of new hobbies. The goal of Soulful Art is to encourage social change among homeless women and the community-at-large.
