Thesis (M.S.)--Montana Tech of The University of Montana, 2012.
The paper reports on a study of an opportunity to create the Butte 100 mountain bike race bible to recognize an oversight by the field of Technical Communication of a group both considered and functioning as race bibles. Using document design principles and Gestalt Theory to support the race bible development, the paper examines a current understanding of race bibles through the lens of current genre theory, advocating the awareness of a possible emerging genre. Pre-prototype and post-race surveys, combined with textual analysis methodology investigated information needs of the mountain bike racing discourse community to begin establishing generic parameters and articulate function. It concludes by underscoring race bible function and importance as a communicative piece of literature to the discourse community by suggesting a possible path to the developing genre.
