This project investigated the processes underlying the language profile seen in autism, which is characterized within the current literature as having weak functional language skills (semantic, discourse, and pragmatic processing deficits) accompanied by relatively intact structural language skills (phonology, vocabulary, and syntax). Specifically, we investigated the roles of general processing limitations and theory of mind impairments in determining that profile. We used three different experimental language measures (Word Recall, Soap Opera, and Social Faux Pas) that contained manipulations of either or both general processing demands and/or theory of mind requirements. We also used a rating scale of adult communication behavior that was designed to measure pragmatic communication skills. We compared the performance of a sample of high-functioning adults with autism to that of a clinical control group of high-functioning adults with fragile X syndrome, and a normal control group of nonautistic, non-fragile X syndrome adults. Each group was comprised of 14 individuals, and both control groups were matched to the autism group on verbal IQ.

We did not find support for general processing limitations accounting for autism-specific performance on any of our experimental language measures. Instead, all manipulations of general processing demands showed that the three groups were affected in the same manner. On the other hand, we did find some support for autism-specific theory of mind impairments accounting for performance on our language measures. However, this support was qualified by how "theory of mind" demands were instantiated in our tasks, namely whether or not the subjects had to make significant inferences about another's mental state, and whether or not an empathic response was necessary. Also, the autism group was rated as having significantly lower pragmatic communication skills than both control groups, and performance on this measure was best predicted by performance on theory of mind questions from the Social Faux Pas task. Specific implications of this full set of results for general processing theories and the theory of mind account of language in autism are discussed.
