Hospitality and tourism is a burgeoning industry which has fueled a top-tiered luxury hospitality market catering to elite guest demands of service and product excellence. This study sought to identify the universal individual aptitudes related to high performance in the luxury hospitality industry. Archival data and focus group data were gathered for the study. Two focus groups of top performers were conducted: one in North America and one in Southeast Asia. Specific shared themes emerged from the analysis including achiever, other-directed, recognition, training, guest centricity, supervision, communication, and contribution. Two major conclusions were drawn. First, no major cultural differences were found between top-performing Eastern hospitality professionals and top-performing Western hospitality professionals. Second, specific aptitude characteristics appear to be innate to top performers within the luxury hospitality industry: strong drive and achievement, high positivity, resourcefulness, service-oriented, hunger for learning and open communication, and being a mentor or role model to others.
