South Korean dramas have taken the world by storm and have not only permeated international boundaries in Asia and Europe, but also have traveled to America and Hawaii where they have seen great success. This study analyzes what uses and gratifications fans in Hawaii receive from watching Korean dramas, as well as why fans in Hawaii find the dramas extremely "addictive." The development of Korean pop culture has increasingly grown and expanded in Hawaii because of social factors that contribute to feelings of similarities and acceptance, which, in turn, influences how fans identify with the pop culture items and also influences what kinds of uses and gratifications fans receive. The one-on-one interviews and focus group conducted in this research reveal that Hawaii fans find dramas addicting because of the storylines, physical attractiveness of the actors/actresses, aesthetics of the dramas, and the emotional benefits they receive. Because Hawaii fans find Korean dramas fascinating, they become part of Korean drama fan clubs, which allows them to find gratification in personal and community socialization. This research fills the void left by previous research that focused on the broad aspect of the Korean Wave in Asian countries such as Japan and Korea and specifically will focus on Korean dramas and fans in Hawaii.
