Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 2013.
This dissertation relies on two main ideas: the control of light with matter, and the control of matter with light. The first case focuses on controlling surface plasmons in nanostructures, the goal of which is to develop useful nanodevices. The origin of the control lies in the polarization of the exciting light. In particular, we propose logic gates based on arrays of silver nanoparticles. We define the input signal based on the polarization of the light, and the output on the intensity of light at a detector. We numerically demonstrate a few basic logic gates by light propagation in these subwavelength structures using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method.

The second part of the work is concerned with using ultrashort laser pulses to control molecular motion. We propose a new class of laser-driven molecular rotors with several advantages. The rotor consists of an organic compound adsorbed unto a silicon scaffold. We study the dynamics of the rotor by performing quantum dynamical simulations. We show the importance of the properties of light in effecting unidirectional motion.
