Choral directors interested in expanding their programs to include vocal jazz ensembles often lack both relevant information and experience in the jazz idiom. This document attempts to connect traditional choral conducting and vocal jazz direction through three means: the identification of transferrable and non-transferrable elements of choral ensemble direction, the association of jazz and classical idioms to facilitate relatability between genres, and a summarized "checklist" of topics applicable to the choral director beginning vocal jazz instruction. This includes comparative analysis and consolidation of published literature on this topic, study of ensemble pedagogy, techniques of the jazz vocalist, and demonstration of numerous discussion topics on the included graduate recital CD. In comparing and contrasting vocal genres, the intended outcome of this document is to provide a greater understanding of vocal jazz for choral directors, and to improve current vocal jazz performance practice for existing ensembles.
