Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
Bridging the Gap: Design and the Fine Art Market in the 21 st Century is an analysis of the historical hierarchy of the arts and its continuing effect on the market for objects of design. The hierarchy has been a prevailing idea that the fine arts, such as painting and sculpture, are deemed `higher' than objects with functionality. The history of this traditional theory will be investigated through individuals and movements that have made great strides to right this logic. Four prominent fine artists, Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Donald Judd, and Jorge Pardo, will be examined for their role in creating objects of design within their lives and oeuvres. Their decorative art forms range from china to furniture, and even to jewelry. This thesis will look at the relationship between the two disciplines and the vast difference in valuation between the two markets due to design's utilitarian purpose.
