Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
Detroit, Michigan, once a booming industrial city with close to two million residents in the 1950's is now a destitute and deserted city with empty storefronts, homes, and warehouses. Artists and young entrepreneurs have rediscovered the potential for a new and revitalized Detroit. This thesis will provide a brief history of Detroit and a closer inspection into three of Detroit's historical art purveyors, the Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, and Pewabic Pottery. Additionally, the compilation of research conducted by economists and researchers will provide insight into the ways artist and art-based communities have influenced urban redevelopment. Lastly, an examination of three of the current art-based communities in Detroit, The Russell Industrial Center, Detroit SOUP, and The Heidelberg Project will attest to the city's current art scene and their efforts in revitalizing Detroit.
