The early work of highly established artists poses a great challenge to the appraiser. Can the relationship between the monetary values of early and more mature pieces be predicted? Early works can be difficult to value, especially as they often have no visible stylistic link to the mature works of an artist. In the case of famous artists, where their later creations are celebrated, little attention is given to their earlier creations. This study examines several areas that will aid our understanding of the issues that impinge on the valuation of an artist's early pieces. These are works created when the artist was still a student or at an early stage in their career. This thesis will look at the art market, the appraisal process, the career cycle of the artist and finally on the early works of a selection of artists that have sold at auction.
