Alternative spaces, or art education beyond the K-12 public system, are an essential but overlooked aspect of art education. Beginning with assorted definitions of art education, the research presented in this paper highlights, defines, and discusses Alternative Spaces: Independent School, Museum, and Community Art Education. It asks what their importance to, and impact is, on the field of art education. Using a systematic review of literature, the researcher outlines, explains, and assesses each alternative space as relative to the definition of art education.
